EFL SHOCKER: Blackburn Rovers Face ‘Harsh’ Reality as Ipswich Town Takes Controversial Stand

September 22, 2025

The abandoned Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town looks set to create a major headache for the EFL, with the governing body expected to make a ruling on Monday.

With just 10 minutes remaining at a rain-soaked Ewood Park, referee intervention brought the match to an abrupt halt after heavy rainfall left the pitch unplayable. At the time of abandonment, Blackburn were 1-0 ahead against 10-man Ipswich, a situation that has left fans split over what the fairest outcome should be.

Rovers supporters argue their side deserves the three points, while Ipswich fans have pushed back strongly against such a call. Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell has even publicly backed Blackburn’s claim, but the likelihood of the EFL siding with them appears slim.

Replay looking “most likely” outcome

EFL pundit Ryan Dilks, speaking on the Second Tier Podcast, predicted that the tie will almost certainly have to be replayed in full — a scenario he admits feels particularly harsh on Blackburn.

“I think the most likely scenario is they just replay the entire game,” Dilks explained. “But it’s so harsh on Blackburn, isn’t it? If Ipswich then win the replay and secure promotion by just a few points, you’ve opened up a real can of worms. It’s a logistical nightmare.”

The call-off has robbed Rovers of what would have been a valuable victory, one that could have lifted Valérien Ismaël’s men into the Championship’s top half.

What options remain?

While Blackburn might hope the scoreline is preserved and only the final 10 minutes are replayed, such a solution is almost impossible given the travel demands and scheduling issues for Ipswich. A full replay, however frustrating, is widely seen as the fairest and most practical decision available to the EFL.

Whatever the verdict, one set of supporters is certain to feel aggrieved — leaving this soggy night at Ewood Park with repercussions far beyond the 80 minutes that were actually played.
