Graham Potter’s position at West Ham United is under serious threat after a dismal start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign — but the manager has not lost the full backing of his squad.

The Telegraph reports that while the club’s hierarchy have begun sounding out potential successors, a number of senior players remain convinced Potter is still the right figure to lead the Hammers through their current crisis.

West Ham have suffered four defeats in their opening five league fixtures, three of which came in London derbies against Chelsea, Tottenham, and Crystal Palace. A shock early exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of fellow strugglers Wolves has only intensified pressure on the 50-year-old.

The next fortnight could prove decisive, with crucial away matches at Everton and Arsenal before the international break likely to determine whether Potter stays in charge.

Replacements already discussed

Co-owners David Sullivan and Karren Brady have reportedly started considering alternatives, with former Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo on their shortlist. Ex-Hammers manager Slaven Bilic has also surprisingly re-entered the conversation.

Yet inside the dressing room, Potter continues to command loyalty. While the identities of his supporters have not been revealed, it is believed several influential squad members have voiced their belief that a managerial change now would destabilise the team further rather than spark improvement.

A fragile situation

West Ham currently sit 19th in the table with just three points, their sole win coming in a 3-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Performance data suggests they could be slightly higher — expected goals models place them two points and three spots better off — but that offers little comfort to frustrated fans.

For now, the board are reluctant to make a knee-jerk decision. But unless results improve quickly, Potter’s brief reign in East London may soon reach its end.
