Adingra struggled to make any kind of impact before being hauled off after just 37 minutes, a clear sign of Le Bris’ frustration. Expectations were high when Sunderland secured Adingra’s signature during the summer transfer window. His Premier League experience — over 60 appearances with Brighton & Hove Albion — made him one of the headline additions in what was an ambitious recruitment drive following the club’s promotion.
The Black Cats spent close to £140 million on eight new players, outspending every side outside the Premier League’s traditional top six. Adingra’s deal, worth up to £21 million, was viewed as a statement of intent — proof that Sunderland were ready to compete at the top level.
However, seven games into the season, the 23-year-old has yet to justify that price tag. Among the new arrivals, he has arguably been the most disappointing so far. While his age suggests there’s still room for development, Sunderland’s battle to stay afloat in the Premier League demands immediate contributions, not long-term promise.
Le Bris Sends a Message
Le Bris’ decision to substitute Adingra before half-time was as ruthless as it was revealing. It sent a clear message that performances, not reputations, will dictate selection. Former England international Steph Houghton, speaking on pundit duty, supported the call, saying:
“Something had to change. United were getting far too much joy down their right side with Amad and Mbeumo.”
Adingra’s early withdrawal is likely to cost him his starting spot when Sunderland host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light on October 18. For Le Bris, who has already shown he’s not afraid to make bold choices, it could be the shake-up his squad needs.
A Reality Check for the Newcomers
The defeat was a reminder of the gap between the Premier League’s elite and the newcomers still finding their feet. Sunderland, who have otherwise impressed since their return to the top flight, were second best for most of the contest and punished by a sharp United side.
For Adingra, it was a day to forget — but perhaps the wake-up call required to reignite his Sunderland career.
