Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town finally have confirmation on when their abandoned Championship clash at Ewood Park will be replayed — bringing an end to more than two weeks of uncertainty and debate.

The two sides were originally set to face off on Saturday, September 20th, for what would have been their sixth league fixture of the campaign. Despite severe weather warnings issued across much of the UK, the match was allowed to proceed as planned, with heavy wind and rain battering the pitch throughout the afternoon.

That decision ultimately backfired. With just ten minutes left on the clock and Blackburn leading 1–0 courtesy of a Todd Cantwell penalty, referee Stephen Martin called the game off after declaring the surface unplayable. Ipswich had already been reduced to ten men following Jacob Greaves’ dismissal, leaving Rovers on the brink of a crucial second league victory — only for the contest to be voided.

The fallout was predictably heated. Both clubs, along with their players and managers, voiced frustration at the outcome. Blackburn boss Valérien Ismaël and midfielder Taylor Gardner-Hickman were particularly outspoken, questioning the fairness of replaying the match in full rather than resuming from the point of abandonment. But the EFL stood firm, insisting that the fixture would need to start again from scratch later in the season.

That rematch will now take place on Tuesday, December 2nd, kicking off at 7:45 PM at Ewood Park. While the previous result has been wiped from the record books, Greaves’ red card from the original tie still counted — forcing him to miss Ipswich’s next league fixture, a 2–1 win over Portsmouth on September 27th.

In an effort to ease tensions and acknowledge the supporters who endured the miserable September weather, both clubs have agreed on a range of goodwill measures. Fans who attended the abandoned fixture will be able to buy tickets for half price, while Blackburn season ticket holders and hospitality members will gain entry at no additional cost. Supporters purchasing a new ‘flexi season ticket’ will also receive discounted admission.

Ipswich fans who bought tickets for the original away allocation will similarly benefit from a 50 percent reduction, and the club has promised to issue vouchers worth half the ticket’s value to spend in the Portman Road club shop.

Since that storm-hit afternoon, the two teams have experienced sharply contrasting fortunes. Blackburn’s form has dipped, collecting just one point from their following three matches to sit 21st in the table. A victory in the abandoned game would have lifted them slightly higher, but the momentum has since evaporated.

Ipswich, meanwhile, have steadied themselves after a mixed start. Kieran McKenna’s men have taken seven points from their last three games, climbing to ninth and closing the gap to early leaders Coventry City to just six points.

With that in mind, the rescheduled showdown in December is shaping up to be a fascinating and potentially fiery contest — one where both sides will feel they have something to prove. And while Blackburn may still feel aggrieved by the EFL’s handling of the situation, it’s Ipswich who arrive in East Lancashire with form — and perhaps fate — on their side.
