Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has become one of the most sought-after young talents in English football, attracting serious attention from several of Europe’s elite clubs in recent weeks.

Reports from Football Insider (21 September) confirmed that Palace have no intention of selling the 21-year-old in January, determined to keep hold of a player who has quickly established himself as one of their key assets under Oliver Glasner.

Wharton’s performances have reportedly caught the eye of Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and more recently Liverpool, though sources close to the player suggest he is “happy” at Selhurst Park for now.

Palace ready to stand firm amid Wharton interest

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Crystal Palace are in a position to demand a £100 million transfer fee for Wharton — a figure that reflects the current inflated market for top midfielders.

Borson pointed out that Brighton’s valuation of Carlos Baleba at the same price, following Manchester United’s summer approach, has set a new benchmark.

“The market was really shaped when Chelsea paid huge fees for Caicedo and Fernández, and when Rice went for around £110 million,” Borson explained. “That’s now the standard for elite young midfielders. Wharton fits into that bracket — at his age and with his talent, he’s a £100 million player.”

While Rio Ferdinand has publicly urged Manchester United to make a move for Wharton, Palace remain confident of keeping him beyond this season.

Palace in control of Wharton’s future

Wharton joined Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024 for £18 million and has started every one of the club’s 10 matches this season. His consistent performances and maturity have made him a vital part of Glasner’s setup — and strengthened Palace’s bargaining position should offers arrive.

“Palace are negotiating from a position of strength,” Borson added. “There’s no release clause, he’s under contract, and he’s performing at a high level. If even two or three of Europe’s biggest clubs make a move, the price will inevitably reach the £100 million mark.”

The Eagles have already shown in past transfer dealings that they won’t sell their stars cheaply, and with Wharton settled and under a long-term deal, any potential suitors will need to dig deep to test their resolve.

Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League with 12 points from their opening seven matches, Crystal Palace appear in no rush to cash in on one of English football’s brightest prospects.
