Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has backed Ipswich Town to prioritise midfield reinforcements in the upcoming January transfer window, with the club reportedly targeting former Leeds United midfielder Glen Kamara.

After a sluggish start to life back in the Championship, Ipswich have begun to rediscover their rhythm under Kieran McKenna. Following four winless games at the start of the campaign, the Tractor Boys have climbed up the table and reignited their push for promotion — capped off by a memorable 3-1 derby win over Norwich City, their first in 16 years.

Attention has now turned to January, where McKenna and his recruitment team are expected to fine-tune the squad in pursuit of an immediate return to the Premier League. One key target is Glen Kamara, currently on the books at Stade Rennais, with Foot Mercato reporting that Ipswich are exploring a deal worth around €3 million (£2.6 million).

Kamara, 29, featured 37 times for Leeds United during the 2023/24 season, playing a major role in their run to the Championship play-off final. However, his move to France has failed to take off, with just 13 Ligue 1 appearances to his name before being loaned to Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia.

With limited opportunities under new Rennes boss Habib Beye, Kamara is expected to seek a move away this winter — and Ipswich could provide the ideal platform for a fresh start.

Speaking to Football League World, Lee Hendrie believes Kamara would be a smart addition to McKenna’s side, highlighting the need for greater depth and control in midfield.

“I think having more players, particularly in that area, isn’t a bad thing,” Hendrie said. “There’s a big demand on midfielders to dictate games and be that central point, and I don’t think Ipswich have quite hit their best level there yet.

“Kamara’s versatility is a big plus — he can play deeper when needed and adapt to different systems. Bringing him in would give Ipswich more balance and flexibility.”

For Kamara, a return to the Championship could reignite his career. After proving his quality during his spell at Elland Road, the Finland international remains a proven performer at this level and could provide both leadership and composure to Ipswich’s midfield.

Given the relentless schedule of the Championship and Ipswich’s promotion ambitions, investing £2.6m in an experienced, adaptable midfielder could prove a bargain. With Leicester City and Nice also circling, the battle for Kamara’s signature is set to intensify — but Ipswich may hold a key advantage with the promise of regular football and a realistic shot at top-flight return.
