Paul Merson has delivered a surprising prediction ahead of West Ham United’s crucial clash with Brentford this weekend.

The Hammers have endured a torrid run at the London Stadium in 2025, winning just two home matches since the turn of the year — form that has dragged them dangerously close to the relegation zone. Their meeting with Brentford is shaping up to be a vital showdown, with both clubs hovering near the bottom of the Premier League table.

Despite West Ham’s struggles, Merson believes they will edge the London derby.

“There are only three points separating these two sides, so whoever wins gets a massive boost at the bottom,” he explained. “Brentford haven’t been as poor as West Ham, who’ve already sacked their manager, but if the Hammers take all three points, they’ll be level with them — which is incredible to think.”

The pundit admitted his prediction goes against the odds, given West Ham’s miserable home record. “They haven’t won at home since February, and I can’t believe I’m still backing them,” he said. “But Brentford’s away form has been dreadful, and I think that’ll continue — which will please the Hammers fans.”

However, Merson did acknowledge the tension surrounding the club, including fan boycotts, poor performances, and low morale. “With everything going on — the protests, the atmosphere, and that fragile defence — it’s hard to see West Ham turning it around easily,” he added. “Brentford still have enough quality in attack to cause them real problems.”
