Ipswich Town face a crucial few months ahead as several players near the end of their contracts — and Harry Clarke could be among those heading for the exit at Portman Road.

The 24-year-old right-back remains sidelined through injury, and with his current deal set to expire next summer, both he and the club have big decisions to make about his future.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League last season, Ipswich’s return to the Championship has been far from smooth. Kieran McKenna’s side sit 12th in the table, having managed to steady the ship last weekend with a late winner from Jack Clarke against Charlton Athletic — a much-needed response following defeats to Middlesbrough and Charlton.

Despite a stuttering start, there’s still time for the Tractor Boys to mount a push for the play-offs. Several winnable fixtures lie ahead before the next international break, and McKenna will hope his side can rediscover the form that earned them promotion in 2024. However, with only a handful of that promotion-winning squad still in the team, Ipswich are struggling to recapture the same momentum.

Clarke, who joined the club permanently from Arsenal in January 2023, played a vital part in Ipswich’s rise through the divisions. He’s helped deliver two promotions under McKenna, but a frustrating run of injuries has derailed his progress. He hasn’t featured in a senior game since April and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Sheffield United after finding minutes hard to come by in the Premier League.

Competition for places has only intensified this year. Ipswich brought in Darnell Furlong and veteran Ashley Young over the summer, while Ben Johnson has also been preferred in Clarke’s absence. Even with a one-year extension option in his contract, Clarke may need to consider his next move if he’s to play regular football again.

At 24, he’s approaching a pivotal stage in his career. Sitting on the bench won’t do him any favours, but if he can get fit and force his way back into McKenna’s plans, there’s still a chance to reignite his Ipswich career.

The Tractor Boys are yet to shake off the disappointment of last season’s relegation, but Clarke’s energy and drive could be key to lifting them out of their slump. He made 35 appearances during the club’s 2024 promotion-winning campaign — proof of the impact he can have when fully fit.
