Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta is reportedly considering a move away from Selhurst Park, with AC Milan preparing what has been described as a major bid for the 28-year-old.

Mateta, who arrived in January 2022 and is contracted until the summer of 2027, has become a key figure for Palace, scoring 54 goals and adding 12 assists in 172 appearances. Even so, TEAMtalk claim Milan are lining up a high-profile approach and that a source close to the situation says the striker is “open to leaving” as his deal enters its final 18 months.

A switch to Serie A is said to appeal strongly to Mateta, and an offer in the region of £40m could potentially see him depart as early as January. Palace, meanwhile, are already bracing for interest in other stars, with Marc Guehi’s contract winding down and Adam Wharton drawing attention from several Premier League clubs.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked with Mateta, but a move to Italy is believed to be his preferred option should he depart. Palace will not stand in his way, but only if their valuation is fully met.

Despite no longer being the dominant force they once were, AC Milan remain one of Europe’s historic heavyweights, boasting seven Champions League titles. Their stature — along with the promise of European football — is thought to be a key attraction for the French striker.

Palace are currently attempting to tie Mateta to a new contract, though the Evening Standard reports negotiations have stalled, with the club needing to substantially increase their wage offer to keep him. His recent debut for France in October has only strengthened his ambition to play in the Champions League.

That goal isn’t entirely unrealistic at Palace, who sit fifth in the Premier League after 12 matches and have lost only twice all season. Up next, they host Manchester United before travelling to Burnley as they continue their impressive campaign.
