Five league wins so far underline just how comfortably they have adapted.

To stay clear of trouble and cement themselves in mid-table, the club may be ready to invest again when the January transfer window opens. And one name continues to dominate discussions: Matteo Guendouzi. Le Bris has not dismissed the possibility of bringing the Lazio midfielder to Wearside in what would undoubtedly be a high-profile move.

Guendouzi appears a strong fit for Sunderland’s midfield. The Frenchman previously worked with Le Bris during his Lorient days before joining Arsenal. Though his Gunners spell drew mixed reviews, he ended his final league campaign in England averaging 4.9 duels won per match, offering the kind of physical edge that could complement Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki.

Now a more polished player in Serie A, Guendouzi has grown into an important figure for Lazio, producing six goals and ten assists for the Italian club. His 89 percent pass accuracy this season and consistent ball recoveries underline why he will not be available cheaply. Reports suggest Lazio may consider a bid in the region of £26 million.

Given Sunderland’s ambitious summer spending, such a fee may not deter them. However, signing Guendouzi could have major consequences for one popular figure in the squad.

Dan Neil is already feeling the impact of Sunderland’s accelerated growth. Once central to the side that earned promotion—captaining the team and featuring 44 times last season—he has barely figured in the top flight. After the arrivals of Xhaka and Sadiki, Neil has been reduced to just two Premier League minutes. Harrison Jones once praised him as a “proper leader,” but that influence has faded rapidly.

Neil attracted interest from Everton in the summer and may now regret not pursuing the opportunity. Journalist James Copley recently described him as a “bit-part” player, a stark contrast to his role in Sunderland’s Wembley success. His most recent appearance came for the under-21s, and with his contract set to expire next summer, his long-term prospects at the club look bleak.

If Guendouzi signs, Neil could fall even further out of contention, with the Lazio midfielder bringing experience and quality that would place him ahead in the pecking order. A January exit may be on the cards, especially if a club is willing to take advantage of a potentially reduced fee for a proven Championship performer valued at around £7 million. If no offer arrives, Sunderland may simply allow his deal to run down while strengthening the squad around him.
