Ipswich Town’s promotion push is gathering real momentum, with Kieran McKenna’s side climbing to 4th in the Championship after recovering from a shaky start. As the season approaches its midway point, the Tractor Boys sit just five points behind the automatic promotion places, having suffered only one defeat in their last nine league outings. With expectations high and the club fully focused on a Premier League return, further reinforcements are likely in January after a well-backed summer window.
Below are three January moves that could help power Ipswich Town over the line in the promotion race.
A new striker arrives
Promotion contenders need a ruthless edge, on and off the pitch. Ipswich already spread goals throughout the squad, but a sharper focal point would make a significant difference.
George Hirst’s six goals are solid, yet his form can be streaky. Chuba Akpom has struggled to ignite, and Ivan Azon remains a long-term project. Adding a proven, high-impact goalscorer capable of transforming tight games could be the boost Town need to seize control of the promotion battle.
Fringe departures sanctioned
Refreshing the squad is just as important as strengthening it. A couple of players may benefit from leaving in search of regular football, which would also streamline McKenna’s options.
