Sheffield Wednesday salivates with the January transfer window with focus on getting a new top striker as their main target.
Wednesday only managed to avoid relegation from the Championship last season and manager Danny Rohl replaced almost the entire squad during the summer by signing eleven new players at Hillsborough. The newcomers have started contributing, starting the Owls in a direction that is not only headed away from the relegation scrappers but one which may catapult the team to a play-off contender.
The Sheffield Wednesday team started the season well before the coronavirus break and their biggest challenge to promotion might be if they don’t have a main goal scorer. The team’s current strikers such as Ike Ugbo, Jamal Lowe, Michael Smith, and Charlie McNeill continue to deceive the SOC in most matches.
The Owls lost out on a potential answer to their striker problem when they were unable to sign long term target in Mika Biereth in the summer transfer window. Stunning displays by the young striker for Sturm Graz have only compounded Wednesday’s loss of the star player.
After a successful loan period at Motherwell Biereth was doing very well at Sturm Graz, thus, the desire of Sheffield Wednesday to add the player to their arsenal as an attacking option was understandable. However, the club has been cruelly stung in not signing the striker’s services more so when Biereth is performing marvelously in Austria.
One of the main factors that Sheffield Wednesday will regret not signing during this transfer window is Mika Biereth, the boy came extremely close for signing a deal with the owls during the January transfer window. Perhaps Ike Ugbo offered some goals last campaign to ensure the Owls’ place in the Championship was preserved but the failure to sign Biereth might make Rohl feel that he could have gotten a more devastating forward to the team.
Ugbo has not had a good season at Rotherham and Chansiri might look back at his decision not to chase Biereth for a £4 million bid. Goal-scoring form of Biereth in Sturm Graz and during the time he was at the Austrian Bundesliga and Champions League meant that Wednesday stood to benefit a lot with him onboard. Given that Merse and Sheringham failed to deliver for Rohl during the second half of the season, the latter would have appreciated the quality of Biereth out on the pitch and the prospect of profit in subsequent transfer markets.
