“He’s not in the long-term plans”: Danny Murphy responds to Spurs’ transfer speculation

January 4, 2024

Danny Murphy believes star player tenure at Tottenham Hotspur is reaching its conclusion after the player found himself sidelined by manager Ange Postecoglou. This shift, however, is not indicative of any animosity between the player and the manager but rather stems from the simple fact that the new Tottenham boss doesn’t envision a future for Dier in his plans.

Since Postecoglou’s arrival at Hotspur Way, Dier has only featured for 198 minutes in Premier League matches, despite circumstances such as Micky van de Ven’s injury and Cristian Romero’s regular run-ins with suspensions, followed by a recent injury.

According to Murphy, Dier’s perceived “lack of pace” and “physicality” are key reasons for his limited playing time, as these attributes don’t align with the demanding and assertive style of play that Tottenham is aiming to implement under Postecoglou.

Murphy also pointed out that when two fullbacks, namely Emerson Royal and Ben Davies, are consistently preferred over a senior center-back like Dier, it signifies a clear signal that his time at the club is drawing to a close. With Dier’s contract set to expire in 2024, it appears increasingly evident that the question is not if he will depart, but rather when and where he will do so.

The former Sporting Lisbon player, who joined Spurs at the age of 21, is now facing potential options for his next move, including the possibility of signing a pre-contract agreement with his former club, based in Portugal. Alternatively, if he opts to remain in the Premier League, he might await the summer window, with indications that West Ham United is interested in securing his services.

As Murphy summarized, Dier’s situation seems reflective of a loss of favor and confidence, with the current tactical demands at Tottenham not aligning with his strengths. Despite these challenges, Dier’s versatility as a player who can proficiently operate in both central midfield and defense makes him an appealing prospect for potential suitors, likely resulting in a number of clubs expressing interest in acquiring him.
