Lee Hendrie Urges Derby County to Sign Marcus Harness — But Only If Survival Is Secured
Former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie believes Derby County should push to sign Marcus Harness permanently from Ipswich Town this summer — but only if the Rams secure their Championship status.
With just four matches remaining, Derby sit precariously one point above the relegation zone. However, their run-in includes clashes against three of the league’s bottom seven teams, offering a glimmer of hope for John Eustace’s side to steer clear of the drop. The pressure ramps up this Friday as Derby host Luton Town at Pride Park in a high-stakes showdown expected to draw a near-capacity crowd.
Despite the tense relegation fight, Derby’s recruitment team will already have one eye on the summer transfer window. Strengthening the squad — particularly in attack — will be a top priority, and Harness could be part of that vision.
Harness Showing Flashes of Quality Under Eustace
Harness’ form this season has been inconsistent. His early displays under former manager Paul Warne left fans frustrated. But since John Eustace’s arrival, the 29-year-old has shown significant improvement, particularly during March, which earned him a nomination for the Championship Player of the Month.
While the award slipped through his fingers, his performances caught the attention of pundits like Hendrie, who told Football League World that Derby should consider making his stay permanent — but only if they remain in the second tier.
“He’s a player I’ve always believed can deliver big moments,” Hendrie said. “But the key thing for Derby is survival. Everything hinges on whether they stay in the Championship. The situation is so tight, and teams below them are still fighting hard.”
He added, “Harness will also have to consider his own ambitions. He’ll want to remain at Championship level, and if Derby do drop, that could influence his decision. But if they stay up, I think he’d be a great addition. Eustace clearly values him, and I think he’d fit in well with the club’s plans.”
A Strong Finish Needed — But Long-Term Questions Remain
Harness has found some form, but questions remain over his long-term role at Derby. Despite his recent uptick, the Rams may look for more consistent and higher-caliber talent if they are to avoid another relegation scrap next season.
While a permanent move for Harness may come at a low cost, it’s uncertain whether he’d get regular game time if Derby make attacking reinforcements — and that could push the player to consider other options where a starting spot is more secure.
In the short term, however, Derby need him firing on all cylinders. Now operating as a second striker in Eustace’s system, Harness could be crucial in the final stretch.
