Liam Gibbs has broken his silence on Marcelino Núñez’s shock switch from Norwich City to arch-rivals Ipswich Town — a move that has left the dressing room reeling.

The Chilean midfielder’s decision to cross the divide was one of the most surprising transfers of the summer window, sending shockwaves through both fanbases. Onel Hernández was quick to criticise Núñez for joining the Tractor Boys, while the player himself insisted the colours of Ipswich felt “right” for him.

Unsurprisingly, Norwich supporters have turned on their former favourite. But Gibbs has revealed that the sense of betrayal isn’t limited to the stands.

Norwich squad stung by rival switch

Speaking to the PinkUn, the young midfielder admitted that Núñez’s choice to join City’s fiercest rivals has struck a nerve inside the squad.

“It’s a tough one,” Gibbs said. “There’s such a massive rivalry between the clubs, and he was loved by the fans. For him to go there, in the same league, fighting for the same things as us — it hurts.

“As Norwich players, you’d never want one of your own to join Town. But it’s happened, and we’ve had to move on. We’re focused on ourselves now, and when we face them, hopefully we can come out on top.”

Dates for the derby

The East Anglian derby is always a standout fixture, but Núñez’s transfer has added an extra layer of tension.

The first clash of the season takes place at Portman Road on Sunday, October 5 (12:00 BST). Núñez’s Carrow Road return, however, won’t come until April 11, 2026 — a date that promises to be especially fiery.
