TRANSFER BOMBSHELL! Sunderland Boss Spills the Beans on Everton-Linked Star’s Shock Departure!

September 24, 2025

Sunderland underwent a major squad overhaul in the summer transfer window, a shake-up that raised questions about the future of some of their established players.

During the market, youngsters such as Chris Rigg, Dennis Cirkin, and Dan Neil were all reported to be on the radar of Premier League giants including Manchester United, Tottenham, and Everton. None of those moves came to fruition, but speculation around Neil’s long-term role has resurfaced in recent weeks.

Le Bris provides clarity on Neil’s situation

Head coach Régis Le Bris has addressed the issue directly, offering an update on the 23-year-old midfielder after he made his Premier League debut in Sunderland’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Speaking before that match, Le Bris stressed that Neil’s opportunity would come in due time, praising his attitude and work ethic despite limited appearances so far this season.

“I think he trains really well,” the Frenchman told the Sunderland Echo. “He’s still really involved and committed in the process. Until you play, you don’t know, but I’m always positive with young players. If they have the right foundations, talent, and hard work, they just need chances.”

The head coach also acknowledged the fierce competition in Neil’s position, noting that strong options ahead of him are beneficial for both the player and the squad overall.

AFCON could open doors

Le Bris further pointed to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations as a period that could prove crucial for fringe players like Neil. Sunderland are set to lose as many as seven squad members to international duty, which would naturally create opportunities for others to step in.

Neil, who was linked with Everton during the summer, has also been tipped for a possible move to the Championship in January. However, with his first Premier League minutes now under his belt and Le Bris highlighting the importance of the full squad, his immediate future still looks to be on Wearside.
