Leicester City has seen minimal senior player transfer activity within the first week of the window, with Daniel Iversen being the sole departure, moving on loan to Stoke after slipping to fourth-choice goalkeeper under Enzo Maresca.

Iversen’s swift debut for Stoke in the FA Cup against Brighton raises speculation that he might not be the only goalkeeper exiting King Power Stadium this month. Danny Ward, also sliding down the pecking order, is urged by Wales manager Rob Page to secure playing time ahead of Euro 2024 play-offs, generating interest from Sheffield United and Cardiff.

However, Ward’s departure could leave Leicester with only two senior goalkeepers, Mads Hermansen and Jakub Stolarczyk, with Alex Smithies, reportedly injured and absent since the summer, not registered in the squad.

The potential shortage prompts questions about the adequacy of two senior goalkeepers for the season’s latter half. While Ward hasn’t played this season, his presence on the bench has proven crucial in certain situations when other keepers faced issues.

Maresca remains non-committal about City’s strategy, emphasizing decisions will be made if an offer materializes for Ward. Moreover, speculations continue regarding Albert Gronbaek, linked to Leicester in the lead-up to the transfer window. The Bodo/Glimt talent, pursued by multiple clubs, including MLS side Charlotte FC, received an offer of $9.5 million (£7.5m), potentially setting a record sale for Bodo/Glimt.

Interestingly, if Gronbaek makes the move, he’ll be under former City boss Dean Smith at Charlotte FC. Smith’s appointment ties more City connections with Steve Walsh and Christian Fuchs working alongside him.

Leicester’s recent FA Cup tie against Millwall saw a significant rotation by Maresca, showcasing six academy graduates among the 13 players fielded. This continues the club’s streak of incorporating at least one academy player in senior matchday squads, now standing at an impressive 257 games over five years.
