Jack Wilshere’s reign as Luton Town manager began in the worst possible fashion as his side slumped to a 2-0 home defeat against Mansfield Town on Saturday afternoon.
There was plenty of excitement inside Kenilworth Road before kick-off, with supporters hopeful the former Arsenal and England midfielder could inspire an immediate revival. But despite a spirited start, the Hatters produced a flat and disjointed display, especially in the second half, as Mansfield coasted to victory with minimal resistance.
The warning signs were there early on. Within three minutes, Tyler Roberts broke free in the box for the visitors, only to be denied by Josh Keeley’s smart stop. Roberts was a constant threat throughout the opening stages, while Nathan Moriah-Welsh also went close with a low drive that fizzed narrowly wide.
Luton eventually grew into the contest around the 20-minute mark. Jordan Clark saw his close-range shot deflect behind, before George Saville’s corner found Milli Alli, who failed to make clean contact with his header. The Hatters’ best move of the half came on 27 minutes when Christ Makosso crossed for Gideon Kodua, who fired into the side netting.
Their brightest spell continued, and Clark was again involved when his curling effort was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Moments later, Luton earned a penalty after Clark was fouled by Kyle Knoyle, but Nahki Wells saw his spot kick saved — his second consecutive home miss from 12 yards.
That miss proved costly. On 40 minutes, Wells gifted possession to Rhys Oates, who punished the error with a superb curling strike into the far corner to give the visitors the lead. Mansfield should have doubled their advantage before the break, but Will Evans blazed over from close range.
Five minutes into the second half, Roberts came close again, rattling the crossbar from a tight angle. The Stags were then awarded a penalty just before the hour mark when Mads Andersen handled in the box, and Roberts made no mistake this time, sending Keeley the wrong way to make it 2-0.
Wilshere turned to his bench, bringing on Jerry Yates and Zack Nelson, but the response never came. Despite some half-chances — including a Clark effort that sailed over — Luton’s attack looked toothless, and their play was littered with misplaced passes and poor decision-making.
Nelson wasted a late chance when he fired over from inside the area, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the hosts. Mansfield, meanwhile, saw out the match with ease to claim their first away clean sheet of the league campaign.
The final whistle was met with loud boos from the home crowd, as Wilshere’s first game in charge ended in a flat and familiar defeat for a side desperately short on confidence.
