Sam Allardyce believes there could be genuine substance behind talk that Steven Gerrard is being considered for the Leeds United job, despite suggestions that the rumour is nothing more than “wild speculation.”

Daniel Farke is under mounting pressure at Elland Road after a poor run of results dragged Leeds into the Premier League’s bottom three. The German is still expected to take his usual pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s meeting with Manchester City, but his position is clearly under scrutiny.

Gerrard’s name has surfaced as a possible successor if the Leeds hierarchy, led by the 49ers, opt for a change. And according to Allardyce, the link isn’t as unrealistic as some might think.

Speaking on his No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, the former Leeds boss pointed out that the shared ownership ties between Leeds and Rangers could make Gerrard a viable candidate. The former England captain recently declined an opportunity to return to Rangers, who, like Leeds, have investment connections to 49ers Enterprises.

“I don’t think it’s wild speculation,” Allardyce said. “There’s a connection through the ownership. It’s something Gerrard will be looking for. The question is whether he can cope with the pressure of avoiding relegation because it takes over your whole life.”

Gerrard enjoyed major success during his spell at Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021. However, his managerial ventures since then have been far less convincing. He struggled at Aston Villa, winning only 13 of 40 matches, and left Al-Ettifaq after just half a season earlier this year.

With Leeds slipping into danger, the 49ers face a crucial decision if they decide to replace Farke. But given Gerrard’s recent record, many supporters would likely view his potential appointment with concern.
