Luis Hemir may be set for a significant chance to showcase his ability at Moreirense after an injury to one of the club’s forwards, according to reports in Portugal.
The Sunderland striker, currently on loan in the Primeira Liga, returned to his home country in the summer after failing to make an impression on Wearside. His early months in Portugal were hampered by fitness concerns, limiting his involvement, but he has recently featured off the bench in each of Moreirense’s last two matches.
Now, as reported by A Bola, Hemir could be in line for more regular opportunities with teammate Yan Maranhão still unavailable through injury. While Guilherme Schettine remains the undisputed first-choice striker thanks to his excellent form — scoring seven times in 10 league games — Maranhão’s continued absence has opened the door for others. Having already missed the pre-international break clash with SC Braga, the forward is again expected to be ruled out for Saturday’s derby against Famalicão.
This situation could elevate Hemir in the rotation, giving him a platform to earn more minutes in the coming weeks. However, A Bola also highlights that the young forward has not scored since January, during his loan spell with Juventus Next Gen, underlining the scale of the challenge ahead.
Despite his struggles, Hemir remains confident about his long-term prospects. Speaking to Portuguese outlet TSF about Sunderland’s strong start to the season, he said: “I wish my team all the success, since I’m still a Sunderland player. But my focus has to be here, giving everything for Moreirense. It has been a great experience. The team is well-prepared, and the coach is excellent.”
When asked whether this loan could help him force his way back into Sunderland’s future plans, he replied: “Yes. I always try to think day by day, game by game, doing my best. When the time comes to make decisions, I’ll choose what’s right for my future.”
Hemir added that his ambitions remain high: “I still have goals, and that’s why I work every day. I want to play at another level, in the Champions League, and represent my national team. I believe I can achieve that one day.”
