Simon Jordan has claimed Sunderland will never be able to surpass Newcastle United because of the limits imposed by Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Newcastle supporters are still coming to terms with the weekend’s 1 0 derby defeat, where Nick Woltemade’s own goal handed Sunderland both the points and local bragging rights. While the Magpies are gearing up for a Carabao Cup quarter final against Fulham, much of the fanbase remains focused on the fallout from the loss, with pressure growing on Eddie Howe to spark a turnaround.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Crystal Palace chairman argued that the long term gap between the two clubs is too wide for Sunderland to close. He said Newcastle are already established as a Champions League level side, boasting revenues in the region of £400 million, while Sunderland are enjoying the sort of strong first season back in the top flight that many promoted teams experience.
Jordan stressed that Newcastle’s project is several years further along, even if Sunderland deserve full credit for their progress and individual derby success. In his view, the Black Cats can enjoy big moments and standout campaigns, but they cannot consistently compete with Newcastle over time. He added that Newcastle’s challenge is to remain a regular top six contender, while Sunderland simply do not have the means to match their rivals over the long term.
Despite his blunt assessment, Jordan was full of praise for Sunderland’s current trajectory. He pointed out that they have returned to the Premier League, avoided relegation worries and delivered a memorable home derby win, ticking off every major milestone supporters could hope for this season.
Meanwhile, Howe has urged unity as Newcastle look to respond. Speaking ahead of the Fulham clash, he said the responsibility lies with the whole group rather than any one individual. He asked fans to continue backing the team, insisting there is still plenty to play for and the potential remains for the season to end on a high if everyone pulls together.
