Ross Graham believes Dundee United can turn the pain of their derby defeat into motivation when they face Celtic next weekend.
United were beaten 1-0 at Tannadice on Saturday as Ash Hay’s goal sealed a memorable win for Dundee in a fiercely contested clash. When the final whistle blew, the visiting players and supporters celebrated wildly in front of their end, while United were left to reflect on a frustrating afternoon.
Graham admitted it was difficult to watch their rivals enjoy the moment on home turf, but he is convinced that disappointment can be channelled in a positive way. He insists the experience will be used to drive the squad on as they prepare for a trip to the reigning champions. Despite recent setbacks, he stressed that United’s strong festive run still keeps a top-six finish within reach.
The defender pointed to the nature of the goal as a particular source of irritation. Bert Esselink was caught out just before the break when Pan Camara’s misjudged header allowed Hay to break clear and finish past Dave Richards. Graham felt the lapse allowed Dundee to sit deep after the interval and protect their lead.
He added that while the result hurt, he could not fault the team’s effort, noting that United continued to push for an equaliser until the end without reward.
On a personal note, Graham took encouragement from his own return to action. Making his first appearance since picking up a groin injury against Hibs last month, he came on at half-time and felt sharp, despite having managed just one training session beforehand. He now expects to be fully available for the challenge against Celtic.
Graham concluded that the squad are determined to respond, using the sting of the derby defeat as extra incentive to put things right in the next match.
