Leicester City are expected to stand firm over interest in star winger Abdul Fatawu this month, just as they did in the summer.
Even before the January transfer window opened, Fatawu was linked with interest from Bournemouth, who are seeking a replacement for Antoine Semenyo ahead of his potential switch to Manchester City.
Premier League clubs have eyed Fatawu previously, with Everton said to be keen in the summer and with Sunderland seeing a reported £28m bid turned down by City.
Since then, Fatawu has not only contributed to 11 Championship goals, including a few spectacular strikes, but he’s also proven his fitness following the ACL tear he suffered 14 months ago.
Top-flight interest in Fatawu is no surprise then, and manager Marti Cifuentes believes City will tackle the situation in the same way they did in the summer.
Asked how City would approach interest in Fatawu, Cifuentes said: “There is always a strategy, always a plan. Abdul is a very important player for us and the club showed this in the summer. As far as I’m aware, nothing has changed.”
Cifuentes wouldn’t go as far to completely rule out a sale for Fatawu this month. Asked if the Ghanaian was definitively not for sale, he said: “What I’m saying is that he’s a very important player for us and the club has a clear way of working in these cases.”
Fatawu has started every game for City this season, scoring four goals and providing 11 assists.
He has frustrated City supporters of late and has underwhelmed in a few fixtures, but he continues to deliver at a consistent rate. His longest run without a goal or assist this season is just four games.
The 21-year-old joined City initially on loan two-and-a-half years ago, with his move from Sporting Lisbon made permanent in a £14m deal 18 months ago.
