Celtic’s victory over Dundee United was a completely dominant display from start to finish.
In Martin O’Neill’s first match since returning for a third spell, the Hoops looked rejuvenated as they swept aside the visitors with four unanswered goals at Celtic Park.
Yang Hyun Jun and Arne Engels struck twice in an impressive opening half, setting the tone for a comfortable afternoon. After the break, goals from Benjamin Nygren and Daizen Maeda ensured the result was beyond doubt.
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin had little argument with the final scoreline, admitting his side were well beaten. However, he did highlight one moment he felt could have been reviewed more closely.
Julian Araujo was handed his first start for Celtic, lining up at right back as O’Neill reverted to a back four. The defender impressed overall, although he was booked for a heavy challenge on Will Ferry during the first half.
Goodwin suggested the tackle was reckless and believed it could have warranted further scrutiny. He said Ferry took a painful knock high on the ankle and felt the incident was checked too quickly without serious consideration from VAR. While he accepted the decision, he made it clear his player felt the full force of the challenge.
Reflecting on the match as a whole, Goodwin acknowledged the task his team faced. He noted Celtic’s quality and said the recent managerial change had lifted both players and supporters, creating a far more intense atmosphere than in previous weeks.
He added that visiting Celtic Park inevitably means long spells without the ball and that resilience around the penalty area is essential. Goodwin felt his side could have defended much better for several of the goals and admitted conceding twice early made the challenge almost impossible. He also pointed out that his team failed to take the few opportunities they did manage to create.
For Celtic, several players stood out. Engels was tireless in midfield, covering huge ground and dictating play. Out wide, Yang and Sebastian Tounekti caused constant problems, with both directly involved in goals and looking dangerous throughout.
Araujo’s strong showing could see him retain his place ahead of Anthony Ralston and Colby Donovan if he continues at this level. Tounekti’s performance also raised questions up front, with Maeda now appearing well placed to lead the line ahead of Johnny Kenny.
