Reo Hatate is enduring a frustrating campaign at Celtic, with the Japanese midfielder struggling to find the form that once made him such a key figure at Parkhead.
The 26 year old has drifted in and out of the starting line-up this season and has been unable to rediscover the spark that defined his first two years in Glasgow and won him such admiration from supporters. While he remains one of the most talented players in the Scottish game, Hatate was left on the bench for the recent victory over Falkirk.
Introduced late on, his cameo raised concerns for former Celtic midfielder John Collins, who was alarmed by what he saw from the Japan international.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Collins said Hatate’s lack of energy was noticeable. He felt the midfielder looked exhausted despite only being on the pitch for a short spell, adding that substitutes are usually expected to lift Celtic in the closing stages rather than leave the side hanging on. Collins also criticised Celtic’s poor use of the ball late in the game, describing the final period as worrying.
The situation has prompted renewed debate about Hatate’s future. There is a growing sense that Celtic may have missed the ideal time to sell him last summer, with his influence and momentum already on the decline. After four years at the club, a parting of ways could suit both parties.
That said, any decision is likely to be delayed until the summer. Even below his best, Hatate remains an important option as Celtic push through the decisive stage of the title race.
