Crystal Palace are weighing up a move for a new midfielder before the January window closes as they look to ease their shortage of options in the centre of the pitch.
The issue has been highlighted by Oliver Glasner, who is due to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. The Palace boss delivered a fierce criticism of the club’s hierarchy after the recent 2 1 loss to Sunderland, claiming the squad has been left stretched and unsupported.
Glasner said he could not fault his players for their effort, pointing out that Palace have been operating with only 12 or 13 senior options available for some time. He was particularly frustrated by the decision to sell club captain Marc Guehi on the eve of a Premier League fixture, admitting he struggled to understand the timing of the move.
Midfield is an area of real concern, with both Daichi Kamada and Cheick Doucoure currently sidelined through injury. As a result, Palace are exploring the market for reinforcements and could act before the deadline.
According to Caught Offside, the Eagles are considering a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, with both loan and permanent options being discussed. However, Palace would face stiff competition, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Napoli and Atletico Madrid also monitoring the Brazil international.
Wolves are unlikely to make any deal easy, having previously been reported to value Gomes at around £50 million. The 24 year old earns close to £105,000 per week and remains one of Wolves’ most valuable assets despite their struggles near the foot of the table.
Gomes has built a reputation as an energetic, all round midfielder, praised for his relentless ball winning and ability to carry possession. Even in a difficult campaign for Wolves, he has stood out at times, including a recent display against Everton where he led all players with five tackles.
With over 100 Premier League appearances to his name, Gomes would bring experience as well as intensity to Palace’s midfield. Given Glasner’s concerns about squad depth, a move for the Brazilian could represent a significant boost if the club are able to compete for his signature.
