Crystal Palace have quietly accelerated their work in the January transfer window, with sources indicating the club have opened discussions over a move for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Eagles appear to have gained an early edge in the race, while Leeds United have fallen behind due to two major obstacles.
The Norway international has become one of the most sought after forwards this month after Wolves signalled they were open to selling him and set a clear valuation. Interest has gathered momentum since then, with several clubs exploring the possibility of a deal for the prolific striker.
Oliver Glasner is keen to add more physicality to his attacking options, and Strand Larsen fits that brief. With Jean-Philippe Mateta pushing for a move away from Selhurst Park, Palace have identified the Wolves forward as a leading candidate to fill any potential gap in their frontline.
Initial talks are understood to be ongoing, focusing on both the structure of a transfer and the player’s openness to joining Palace. One factor working in Palace’s favour is sporting director Matt Hobbs, who knows Strand Larsen well from his time at Molineux.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United are monitoring the situation but remain cautious until their financial position becomes clearer. Aston Villa and Everton are also tracking developments, though both clubs are said to be proceeding carefully due to budget limitations.
Leeds United lose ground in Strand Larsen chase
Leeds United are not expected to challenge seriously for Strand Larsen at this stage. Despite long standing admiration and having registered interest through intermediaries, the Yorkshire club are unable to meet Wolves’ £40 million valuation.
Wolves are keen to secure a sale this month, believing January offers the best chance to maximise the striker’s value. With relegation looming and plans already being drawn up for a Championship campaign next season, the club are preparing for a rebuild.
The asking price has proven problematic for Leeds, and even the idea of including Joel Piroe in a potential package is unlikely to persuade Wolves. On top of that, the salary Strand Larsen is expected to command is also beyond Leeds’ comfort zone.
As a result, Palace currently appear to be in the strongest position, although negotiations are still at an early stage and interest from elsewhere means the picture could change quickly.
Meanwhile, Leeds risk missing out on another long term target amid developments surrounding Harry Wilson, with Fulham pushing to secure the in form winger on a new contract. Claims linking Leeds to a €15 million move for an Austrian attacker have also been dismissed.
At Selhurst Park, Mateta remains frustrated after Palace turned down a bid from Juventus, but the striker still hopes a move away can be agreed before the window closes.
