AC Milan have submitted an official offer for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, with personal terms already agreed between the player and the Italian club, according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna.
It has been a turbulent January for Palace. Their problems began with a surprise FA Cup exit at the hands of non-league Macclesfield, followed by captain Marc Guehi completing a move to Manchester City. Soon after, Oliver Glasner confirmed he will step down as manager when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The situation worsened when it emerged that Mateta, the club’s leading scorer, had asked to leave Selhurst Park during the current window. That admission has prompted several clubs to move from interest to concrete offers.
Mateta, who has earned an “elite” tag for his recent form, quickly became one of the most sought-after strikers available this month. Juventus were initially keen but walked away after being put off by Palace’s valuation. Aston Villa then appeared to be leading the race as they searched for a new forward, but their decision to re-sign Tammy Abraham has removed them from contention.
Attention has now turned to Milan, who have lodged a formal bid for the France international. Palace rejected the proposal as it fell short of their asking price, despite Mateta having already reached an agreement with the Serie A side on personal terms.
While Palace are open to a sale, they are under no immediate pressure to cash in. Mateta is under contract until 2027, and the club are determined to secure full value for one of the Premier League’s most consistent scorers over the past two seasons.
Behind the scenes, Palace are preparing for all scenarios. Glasner has publicly stated that no transfer is imminent and expects Mateta to feature against Chelsea on Sunday. However, recruitment plans are progressing in case a deal is struck late in the window.
Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen has been discussed internally, although competition for his signature is strong, while the club are also continuing talks over a move for young striker Sidiki Cherif.
Unless Palace’s valuation is met, Mateta will remain in south London, but with interest gathering pace, his situation is likely to remain a major talking point as the window draws to a close.
