For a large section of the Celtic support, Michael Nicholson has become a lightning rod for frustration.
The club’s chief executive has faced sustained criticism in recent months, with many fans pointing to him as a key reason behind what they see as a lack of ambition and urgency in the transfer market. His name was also singled out by the Celtic Fans’ Collective when they announced plans to boycott the Scottish Cup tie against Dundee.
Martin O’Neill was asked directly about Nicholson’s position and the growing anger around the boardroom. The veteran manager used the moment to send a clear message to those at the top of the club.

Discontent among supporters has only intensified as Celtic continue to post healthy finances while relying on short term solutions in the market. January brought five new arrivals, but every one of them came in on loan or temporary terms.
While O’Neill stressed that he has had no personal problems working with Nicholson, he made it clear that the wider leadership must adapt to the modern game or risk pushing fans further away.
He explained that during his recent period working closely with the chief executive, Nicholson had been supportive and proactive in trying to move things forward. However, O’Neill added that the club as a whole needs to be willing to learn, evolve and look critically at how it operates.
The Celtic boss also suggested that change is overdue at board level, noting that chairman Brian Wilson is keen to see progress in that area. O’Neill’s message was simple: without a shift in mindset and better engagement, the disconnect between the club and its supporters will only continue to grow.
