Celtic’s decision to appoint Wilfried Nancy has turned out to be a major misstep.
There was genuine optimism when Nancy took charge in December. Much of that confidence stemmed from the success Ange Postecoglou enjoyed and the early buzz surrounding Nancy when he first arrived at the club in 2021 and helped steady the ship.
While Martin O’Neill could yet guide Celtic to the title, he has already made it clear that his return is only a short term fix and that he will step aside at the end of the season.
With that in mind, attention is already turning to who should lead the champions next. Former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie believes the answer could be found closer to home, pointing the finger firmly at Fir Park.
McAvennie backs Askou for Celtic job
Motherwell have earned widespread praise this season for their style of play, with many viewing them as one of the most attractive sides in the Premiership.
Jens Berthel Askou took charge at the start of the campaign and has made an immediate impact. The Steelmen sit fourth in the table, just five points behind Celtic, despite operating with a far smaller budget.
Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank podcast, McAvennie made no secret of his admiration for the Dane and his desire to see him in the Celtic Park dugout next season.
“The one I would love right now is the Motherwell manager,” McAvennie said. “Just look at the way they play football.
“Imagine what he could do with a club like Celtic. That could really take us to another level.
“Martin is doing a great job, but it’s a temporary situation. He’s doing what he does best and getting through it.”
Askou’s impressive numbers
Motherwell’s resources are limited compared to the league’s heavyweights, which makes their push towards the top end of the table even more impressive. European qualification is a realistic possibility if their form continues, further underlining the work Askou has done.

With results like that, it is easy to see why McAvennie believes Celtic should be taking a serious look at Askou when the search for a new manager begins.
