Crystal Palace are considering Sean Dyche as a potential successor to Oliver Glasner, with the former Nottingham Forest and Everton manager viewed as a low risk option for the Selhurst Park hierarchy.
Glasner will depart this summer having transformed Palace’s fortunes, leading them to FA Cup glory last season and currently guiding them through a European Conference League campaign. However, inconsistent Premier League form and his January announcement of his impending departure have created uncertainty.
While Andoni Iraola remains the top target and Thomas Frank and Gareth Southgate have been mentioned, Football Insider reports that Dyche has emerged as a leading candidate due to his experience and availability. The 54 year old was dismissed by Nottingham Forest earlier in 2026 following a promising start that ultimately faded.
The prospect of Dyche raises questions about tactical direction. Glasner established an aggressive, high energy approach that delivered silverware and European qualification. Dyche, conversely, built his reputation on deep defensive blocks and organised structures, earning a reputation for pragmatism that occasionally frustrated supporters at his previous clubs.
Analyst Raj Chohan has noted Dyche’s capacity to “catch teams out with a nice high press at times,” suggesting more flexibility than his stereotype implies. His defensive principles would suit the physical attributes of record signing Jorgen Strand Larsen.
However, the comparison with Roy Hodgson looms large. The former England manager’s conservative approach eventually alienated the Palace fanbase before his dismissal in early 2024, despite his previous success stabilising the club. Glasner’s subsequent achievements have elevated expectations significantly.
Dyche’s Premier League record shows 99 wins from 350 matches across Burnley, Everton and Forest, yielding 392 points at 1.12 per match. This compares unfavourably with Hodgson’s 136 wins from 418 games and 512 points at 1.22 per match during his various Palace tenures.
The fundamental question facing chairman Steve Parish is whether Dyche represents progress or regression. He would likely secure mid table stability, but whether he could build upon Glasner’s foundations to sustain European challenges remains doubtful. Forest and Everton supporters both experienced initial improvements under Dyche followed by diminishing returns.
Palace have worked diligently to escape their historical pattern of brief highs followed by prolonged struggles. Appointing a manager whose style and trajectory echo previous disappointments risks undermining those efforts, even if his experience offers short term security.
