SFA Appoints Independent Expert to Investigate Chaotic Rangers and Celtic Cup Clash
The Scottish Football Association has officially named Mark Blackbourne as the Independent Lead to investigate the chaotic aftermath of the recent Scottish Cup quarter-final between Rangers and Celtic. Blackbourne is a highly experienced sports event consultant who currently oversees match operations for major international competitions under both UEFA and FIFA.
The review will center on the intense showdown at Ibrox Stadium on March 8. Following a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory for Martin O’Neill’s Celtic squad, a massive pitch invasion and various other incidents erupted.
Ticketing allocations added a unique dynamic to the heated rivalry. While away crowds had been drastically cut to just 750 fans for nearly eight years, a recent agreement allowed those numbers to rise this season. For this specific cup tie, competition rules enabled Celtic supporters to occupy the entire Broomloan Stand for the first time in nearly a decade.
In a recent statement, the governing body confirmed the scope of the investigation. The review aims to uncover exactly what transpired on match day both inside the stadium and in the surrounding areas. Investigators will scrutinize all decisions made before, during, and after the game. The ultimate goal is to learn from these events and establish recommendations that will prevent similar disruptions at future high-risk fixtures.
The official review process is already underway. Blackbourne recently convened an initial meeting at Barclays Hampden alongside representatives from both football clubs, Police Scotland, and the Scottish FA.
