Chris Sutton has cast serious doubt over Celtic’s title ambitions, arguing that their current standard just isn’t sufficient.
Despite edging a 1-0 victory over St Mirren and snapping an eight-game stretch without a clean sheet, Sutton feels the overall situation tells a different story.
Celtic are finding it tough.
Results have been uneven, goals haven’t come easily, and there’s an increasing belief the squad lacks the depth and ingenuity required to maintain a serious title challenge.
With five matches left, the objective is simple yet intimidating.
Win every game. And even that still may not be enough.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton said: “If Martin O’Neill is right with his calculations, he says that they need to win all five games.
Celtic can’t win the league with their level of performance, unless the wheels fall off Hearts and Rangers. I just don’t see it.
“Performances do matter. They haven’t beaten Heart of Midlothian all season, they haven’t beaten Rangers.
“I don’t think Hearts and Rangers fear Celtic. I don’t think any team fears Celtic. That is a problem.”
It’s a harsh verdict.
And while optimism remains, with key fixtures against Hearts and Rangers still to be played at Celtic Park, Sutton is echoing what many supporters have been thinking.
Unless something dramatically shifts, Celtic’s title hopes could already be fading.
