‘NOT HIM AGAIN!’ SFA Drop Weekend Ibrox Bombshell as Controversial Referee Named for Kilmarnock Clash

The Scottish Football Association has officially appointed Matthew MacDermid to officiate Rangers’ upcoming William Hill Premiership encounter against Kilmarnock at Ibrox this Saturday.

The match marks the return of top-flight domestic action following the recent international break. Rangers are set to host Derek McInnes’ Kilmarnock side in a traditional 3:00 PM kick-off, looking to secure vital league points and establish momentum heading into an intensive autumn schedule.

MacDermid will lead an experienced crew of match officials in Glasgow. On the touchlines, Chris Rae and Ross Anderson have been designated as assistant referees, tasked with running the lines and supporting key decisions. George Calder will take up duties on the sideline as the fourth official, managing the technical areas and overseeing substitutions throughout the afternoon.

Technological oversight will be stationed at the national operations center, where Grant Irvine has been placed in charge of Video Assistant Referee duties. Irvine will be supported by Gary Hilland, who serves as the assistant VAR. The pair will be responsible for reviewing clear and obvious errors regarding key match-defining incidents, including goals, penalties, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.

This weekend’s assignment represents MacDermid’s second Rangers fixture of the current campaign. His initial outing with the club came in late August, when he handled the whistle during Rangers’ narrow 1-0 away victory against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. That encounter was decided by tight margins, requiring steady game management in a hostile atmosphere.

Across the previous season, MacDermid proved to be a frequent presence in games involving the Ibrox side, overseeing five of their fixtures in total. During that stretch, Rangers compiled a mixed record under his jurisdiction, registering two wins, two draws, and a single defeat.

Highlights from that slate of fixtures included dominant attacking displays, most notably a 4-1 triumph over Aberdeen and a convincing 3-0 road win against Dundee. However, there were also challenging afternoons under his watch. Rangers were held to frustrating draws against both Falkirk and Hibernian, and they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Hibernian in a tightly contested match in May.

Both clubs arrive at this weekend’s clash eager to hit the ground running after the two-week pause in domestic football. For the home side, avoiding any early missteps is critical to keeping pace at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Kilmarnock will travel to Govan determined to disrupt the hosts’ rhythm, stay compact defensively, and exploit set pieces or counterattacks.

With significant stakes on the line for both squads, the officiating team will be expected to maintain tight control of the tempo and physical battles right from the opening whistle.
