Leeds United supporters and pundits were left furious over a controversial penalty decision during Sunday’s goalless draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Before the match, fans had already expressed unease when the Premier League confirmed Stuart Attwell as the referee. Many remember him for awarding a dubious penalty that handed Sunderland a 1-0 win at Elland Road earlier in the year. Supporters hoped he would officiate without controversy this time, but he found himself at the centre of attention once again.
The match itself was far from a classic. There were plenty of stoppages and the football on display lacked fluency from both sides. Both teams created enough chances to score, but neither could find the finishing touch. The game ended in a stalemate, with Sunderland the happier of the two sides as they picked up a point and ended their losing run.
Attwell was involved in a major decision on Sunday, with Leeds on the receiving end. Jayden Bogle raised a high foot and caught Sunderland defender Reinildo. It was a late challenge, and the home crowd wanted the defender sent off, but Attwell decided to show only a yellow card.
Later in the game, there were strong calls for a penalty when Dominic Calvert-Lewin went down under a challenge from Luke O’Nien. The striker found himself between O’Nien and the goalkeeper as he chased the ball. VAR checked the incident but did not award a penalty.
On commentary, Jon Newsome and Adam Pope had strong words about the decision.
Newsome said: “That’s a penalty. He just dives into him. Incredible. Anywhere else on the pitch and that’s a foul.”
Pope added: “The defender has just smashed into him. He bundles him over. I don’t get it at all.”

Leeds getting a penalty would have bailed them out after an underwhelming performance. Jaka Bijol pointed out after the game that the team must adopt a mentality to turn these draws into wins.
Five wins from eight games this season is a respectable return, but against Sunderland, Leeds were never the superior side at any point. Daniel Farke will need to go back to the drawing board and find a way to get his team firing again in the coming weeks.
The draw leaves Leeds reflecting on what might have been, while Sunderland will take encouragement from ending their losing streak. For the visitors, the penalty controversy will only add to the frustration of a match that promised more than it delivered.
