Rio Ferdinand was left astonished after his brother Anton expressed the opinion that Tomas Soucek should not be a staple in West Ham’s starting lineup.
During a discussion on the Vibe with Five podcast [4 February, 9m 15s], avid West Ham supporter Anton claimed the team has evolved beyond relying on Soucek for their lineup.
Anton, who previously played defense for the Hammers, suggested a midfield trio consisting of Kalvin Phillips, Edson Alvarez, and James Ward-Prowse instead.
Reacting to this, Rio was taken aback, comparing Soucek’s impact and potential to that of Marouane Fellaini, saying, “I can’t believe that. You’ve got the level below the next Marouane Fellaini [in Soucek].”

Rio remains incredulous, especially given Soucek’s proven goal-scoring ability for West Ham. Indeed, the Czech midfielder has scored eight goals across all competitions this season, alongside providing an assist.
Anton, however, highlighted that with Phillips—currently on loan from Manchester City—gaining fitness, he should be considered a must-start.
Phillips has had a rocky start in his initial appearances for the Hammers, including a mistake against Manchester United in his recent outing. Yet, the hope is that he will overcome these early hiccups and find his form.
Meanwhile, Ward-Prowse and Alvarez are becoming indispensable in the midfield.
