Frank McAvennie has voiced his opinion that West Ham should not extend Kurt Zouma’s contract this summer, despite manager David Moyes reportedly being eager to offer the captain a new deal.
The ex-West Ham striker expressed a preference for the straightforward style of former West Ham and current Wolves defender Craig Dawson over Zouma’s approach. While acknowledging his lack of insight into Zouma’s off-pitch influence, McAvennie questioned the defender’s leadership qualities within the team.
In an exclusive interview with West Ham Zone, McAvennie critiqued Zouma’s fit as a captain and center-back for the Hammers, suggesting the team could aim for a better replacement.
“I just don’t see it with him as a leader or as a center-back for us,” McAvennie stated. “When he joined, I thought he was a decent signing, but now, looking at him, he seems too bulky, almost awkward in his movement. I’m not privy to his behavior or how he interacts with the team during the week, but based on what I’ve seen, he’s not the type of center-back I admire. Craig Dawson’s style appealed more to me – simple and effective defense.”
