Leeds United’s position in the automatic promotion spots of the Championship has slipped, with Ipswich Town now overtaking Daniel Farke’s team following their commanding 6-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road today.
The Tractor Boys got off to a perfect start, breaking the deadlock after just 15 minutes through a goal by Omari Hutchinson, set up by Wes Burns.
Ipswich extended their lead in the 37th minute when Cameron Burgess capitalized on a defensive error from Wednesday to make it 2-0. Unfortunately, Burns had to leave the pitch due to an injury just before Burgess’ goal. Burns had recently been named in the Wales squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 play-offs.
Nathan Broadhead further solidified Ipswich’s lead by scoring a third goal right before halftime, virtually putting the game out of reach for Wednesday. Hutchinson then secured his brace early in the second half with a goal in the 48th minute. Substitute Ali Al-Hamadi added insult to injury for the Owls by scoring a late double.
This triumph marks Ipswich’s seventh victory in their last eight Championship matches, propelling them to 81 points with eight games left to play.
However, Leeds will reclaim their position above Ipswich and current leaders Leicester City if they manage to beat Millwall by a two-goal margin at Elland Road tomorrow. Farke’s squad heads into the match riding a wave of confidence from a 12-game unbeaten streak.
With Leicester and Southampton not featuring in league action this weekend, Leicester is set to face Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on the same day, while Southampton will have to wait until March 29 for their next fixture.
