Carlton Palmer is urging West Bromwich Albion to move quickly in their pursuit of Celtic’s Mikey Johnston to avoid losing out to competing clubs attracted by his impressive performances.
Having graduated from Celtic’s academy, Johnston has amassed nearly 100 appearances for the Scottish powerhouse but has yet to solidify his place as a key player. In a bid to gain more game time, a loan deal was struck in January, bringing Johnston to West Brom for the remainder of the season.
The move has proven to be a masterstroke for the Baggies, with Johnston netting six goals in just 10 games, bolstering Carlos Corberan’s side’s push for a playoff spot. However, the absence of a purchase option in the loan deal complicates matters, and that’s why Celtic opted for the loan move,” Palmer expressed.
Johnston’s undeniable talent needed regular playing time, which he found at West Brom in the competitive Championship. While Albion currently occupy a playoff position, retaining Johnston’s services could prove challenging due to his stellar form.
“If Celtic decides not to retain him, other clubs will surely come knocking,” added Palmer, underscoring the need for West Brom to act swiftly to keep Johnston in their ranks amid mounting interest.
