“Striker with a Blank Slate: Ex-Rangers Forward Benched, Publicly Blasted by Manager”

April 10, 2024

Former Rangers scout Piotr Kasprzak remains convinced that Mateusz Zukowski’s lack of game time at Ibrox was not a reflection of his abilities. With James Tavernier’s consistent performances securing his position in the starting lineup, opportunities for Zukowski were always going to be limited.

Kasprzak expressed his thoughts on the unsuccessful transfer, acknowledging Zukowski’s initial positive reception at the club. Despite being among the top performers in physical tests, Zukowski faced tough competition due to Tavernier’s pivotal role in the team during their run to the Europa League final.

Following his move back to Poland with Slask Wroclaw in 2023, Zukowski aimed to prove his worth. However, his performances have not lived up to expectations, unlike Tavernier, who continues to excel with impressive goal contributions.

Slask coach Jaciek Magiera has publicly criticized Zukowski for his lackluster displays, urging him to fulfill his potential on the field. Despite showing promise during his loan spell at Lech Poznan, Zukowski now finds himself struggling for minutes in the reserves, recently featuring for Slask’s B-team in lower-tier matches.

As Zukowski strives to make an impact and silence his critics, including those labeling him as the worst winger in the Ekstraklasa, his recent hat-trick performance raises questions about his future prospects. Will this be a breakthrough moment for Zukowski, or merely a fleeting glimpse of his potential as he navigates a challenging phase in his career?

“Building on an impressive hat-trick performance, Mateusz Zukowski remains optimistic about his future prospects. Speaking to the Slask website, he expressed his delight at finding his scoring touch in the reserves and eagerly looks forward to his next opportunity in the Ekstraklasa.

The recent feat holds significant personal value for Zukowski, considering the pressure of delivering consistent numbers. “Scoring goals in consecutive games has been rewarding, and I aim to maintain this form in the upcoming matches,” he remarked.

Contrary to his previous role as a right-back following a move to Rangers, Zukowski believes his true potential lies further up the pitch. Embracing versatility, he acknowledges his background as a striker and winger, emphasizing a strong preference for these positions. This season, he has relished the chance to showcase his attacking prowess, reaffirming his belief in excelling as a forward.”
