‘Shocked and Amazed’ – Michael Stewart Astounded by Struggling Rangers Star against ‘Abysmal’ Hearts

April 21, 2024

Cyriel Dessers impressed Michael Stewart with his remarkable opening goal for Rangers in the first half against Hearts at Hampden, sparking reactions from the pundits during the live coverage of the Scottish Cup semi-final on 21st April. The Nigerian striker, often under scrutiny, showcased excellent composure as he deftly shifted the ball onto his left foot in the box and slotted it past Craig Gordon in the fifth minute, following a great setup by James Tavernier.

Philippe Clement implemented significant changes to his lineup after a string of poor results in the SPFL, and it paid off early on as Dessers, supported by Tavernier and Todd Cantwell, displayed a moment of brilliance that drew high praise from both Stewart and Ally McCoist.

McCoist marveled at the goal, emphasizing Tavernier’s crucial involvement in setting up the play, while Stewart commended Dessers for his skill and finishing prowess despite facing multiple challenges in the build-up.

Although Hearts had opportunities to prevent the goal, they were unable to stop Dessers from finding the back of the net, marking his 18th goal of the season and showcasing a side of his game that critics often question.

Despite a strong start, Rangers failed to capitalize on their lead and allowed Hearts to creep back into the game before halftime. While some defensive lapses from players like John Lundstram were evident, goalkeeper Jack Butland put in a solid performance to keep the opposition at bay.

Stewart has been vocal in his critiques of Dessers this season, drawing unfavorable comparisons to his counterpart Lawrence Shankland. This perspective has not gone without criticism itself as fans question Stewart’s coverage of the Light Blues in general.

Although initially impressed by the performance of the Gers striker, he believes more consistent displays are essential after the break to ensure a secure outcome.
