Gary Lineker marked his jubilation after Leicester City clinched promotion to the Premier League on Friday evening following Leeds United’s 4-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers. With just two games remaining, Enzo Maresca’s squad secured a swift return to the top flight, maintaining a four-point lead over second-placed Leeds with a game in hand.

Former Foxes striker Lineker took to social media shortly after the final whistle at Loftus Road, expressing his excitement with a simple message: “Back in the big time. Come on you Foxes,” he posted on his preferred platform, now known as X.

This season presented its challenges for Leicester, initially soaring 14 points ahead of third place before a slump in form raised doubts about their promotion prospects. Moreover, the club faced scrutiny for an alleged breach of the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules in March, potentially facing a points deduction in the upcoming season.

Nonetheless, Leicester achieved their primary goal after suffering relegation from the Premier League last season, ending a nearly decade-long stay in England’s top tier. The focus now shifts to securing the Championship title in upcoming matches against Preston and Blackburn.

Asked if he would be following the Leeds match on Friday afternoon, Leicester manager Maresca disclosed his plans to spend quality time with his family instead. “On Friday nights, I usually attend my son’s under-11s training,” he mentioned. “We then stick with tradition and enjoy pizza together as a family with the kids. Tonight will be no different. I will watch my son play and share a meal with my family, although I might sneak a peek at other results on occasion.”
