Hearts boss Steven Naismith expressed disappointment with his players’ lack of experience in the 3-0 loss at Celtic Park but also highlighted several positives from their performance. Celtic found the net twice in the first 21 minutes courtesy of Kyogo Furuhashi before sealing the win with a late penalty converted by Matt O’Riley.
Although Hearts struggled to contain Kyogo defensively at times, their attacking display showcased bravery and promise. Naismith provided a candid assessment of the match, pointing out both the strengths and weaknesses from his standpoint.
“We began the game strongly, with both teams looking comfortable on the ball,” Naismith remarked. “The key difference was our failure to convert chances while Celtic capitalized on theirs. Goals alter the course of a game. We conceded an early goal, particularly disappointing as we usually excel in defending set-pieces.
“After conceding, we gathered ourselves and managed to create opportunities. Despite being at Celtic Park where chances can be scarce, we had some quality ones. Unfortunately, we couldn’t convert due to either excellent saves or our own shortcomings.
“During the second goal, we squandered possession despite having full control. Our lack of structure allowed Celtic to score easily. Making such mistakes creates an uphill battle. Nonetheless, there were many positives in our performance.”
At halftime, Hearts were frustrated by the 2-0 scoreline. “To progress and aim for success, we must be proactive in such matches rather than just defending for 90 minutes and hoping for a goal. We showed attacking intent, especially in the first half.
“However, the downside is that good players will seize the opportunities you give them. We made mistakes, showing naivety in decision-making. Understanding the situation and location on the field is crucial. Loss of possession affected our structure and gave Celtic momentum.
“Zander also made some exceptional saves, which is a positive. It’s our first season together, and creating chances is encouraging. But we must realize that relinquishing possession while in control is unacceptable. We aim to play expansively while being responsible with the ball. Our errors were duly punished.”
Hearts made a strong appeal for an offside call after Kyogo scored the opening goal, but Naismith expressed his belief that there was no infringement. “After reviewing it on the iPad, I don’t believe it was offside,” he stated. The timing of the early goal was unfortunate for Hearts, as it shifted the momentum of the game. Naismith acknowledged Celtic’s experience in capitalizing on such situations and praised their ability to use it to their advantage.
“Celtic, being one of the most seasoned teams in such scenarios, know how to leverage an early goal. Their key players are returning to form and gaining fitness with each passing week, making them a formidable force when provided with opportunities,” Naismith noted. Despite the setback, Naismith highlighted the positive aspects of Hearts’ performance, particularly their courage on the ball and ability to play through Celtic’s defense. He lamented the lack of goals but remained optimistic about the team’s progress.
