Todd Cantwell Sparks Outrage Among Rangers Fans by Deleting Controversial Post Just Before Cup Final

May 21, 2024

Todd Cantwell has been dwelling in the intense spotlight of Glasgow for the past 18 months. However, the Rangers star seems to be struggling to grasp the importance of his social media presence before a crucial Old Firm match, especially one as significant as a Scottish Cup Final.

Despite being left out of the starting lineup in the last two encounters with Celtic and being benched during the defeat at Parkhead that shattered Rangers’ title aspirations, Cantwell made a triumphant return by scoring in consecutive matches against Dundee and Hearts.

His recent performances have now put the 26-year-old midfielder in contention for a rare starting role against Celtic at Hampden this Saturday. Philippe Clement’s team is determined to bounce back from the disappointment of witnessing their rivals secure yet another championship and aims to finish the season on a high note by clinching a domestic Double after already winning the League Cup in December.

Nevertheless, Cantwell’s social media activity on Monday night has stirred up frustration among the already disgruntled Rangers supporters, who are discontented with how their league campaign unfolded.

No stranger to enigmatic posts on social platforms, Cantwell shared a picture of his goal celebration from the recent 3-3 draw at Tynecastle, where he gestured for silence and captioned it “Shushburger please” with a laughing emoji. While this could have been an innocuous jest among friends, he discreetly tagged two other accounts in his Instagram stories.

However, this post quickly irked Rangers fans online, with many advising the player to maintain a low profile and let his performance on the field speak for itself ahead of the crucial upcoming game. Some questioned his choice to post a picture from a match they failed to win on the same day Celtic lifted the Premiership trophy.

One frustrated fan expressed, “Some players just don’t understand, Todd Cantwell is one of them.”

Another commented, “I found Todd Cantwell’s celebration on Saturday to be somewhat embarrassing.”

A third fan remarked, “I wish Todd Cantwell would just stay quiet on social media, he seems unable to help himself.”

Another supporter pleaded, “Can someone please take Todd Cantwell’s phone away from him?”

Yet another criticized, “Todd Cantwell’s ‘shushburger’ posts on Instagram after a 3-3 draw when there’s a Cup Final approaching are baffling; he should make a statement on the pitch.”

Despite the backlash, Cantwell swiftly removed the picture from his Instagram stories and reposted it without the caption. He also shared another post of himself in action against Hearts with the caption, “Ready up.” However, Rangers fans remain unimpressed with the Englishman’s actions leading up to the crucial showdown against their historic rivals this weekend.
