Coventry City’s hopes of securing the services of Peterborough United’s Harrison Burrows seem to be diminishing as reports connecting him to a potential move to Sheffield United gain momentum.
The Sky Blues have shown interest in the 22-year-old left-back and captain from Posh, especially after Doug King’s successful £4.25 million acquisition of Ephron Mason-Clark in January. Darragh MacAnthony, the chairman of Peterborough United, disclosed that Coventry City has expressed interest in several players from his team.
In a revealing moment on his podcast, The Hard Truth, MacAnthony shared insights into the negotiation dynamics between him and City owner Doug King during the pursuit of Mason-Clark. The Irish entrepreneur, aged 47, disclosed, “Doug even expressed interest in having an option on one of our other players because they admire quite a few individuals from our squad.” Among potential targets for Coventry City is defensive midfielder Hector Kyprianou, who attracted a rejected bid from another Championship club earlier this year.
According to football writer Alan Swann from the Peterborough Telegraph, the prevalent belief is that Coventry holds a ‘first option’ on a Peterborough player this summer, with Kyprianou or Burrows being prime contenders.
Sheffield United has maintained silence on the matter and has refrained from commenting on the recent speculation surrounding Burrows moving to the Championship side.
Swann recently reported, “A reliable source informed the PT that Burrows was scheduled for a medical examination in Sheffield by the end of this week, yet there hasn’t been official confirmation from either club yet.”
Peterborough United is expected to demand a substantial transfer fee for Burrows, and the situation at Bramall Lane is further complicated due to the club’s ongoing ownership transition, which has curtailed their summer transfer activities.
Responding to a Sheffield United fan’s inquiry on social media about the availability of Burrows and Ronnie Edwards, Posh chairman MacAnthony playfully remarked, “One out of two ain’t bad.”
In the midst of all this, Danny Hall from the Sheffield Star, covering the Blades, reported, “Sheffield United’s hopes of landing Peterborough wing-back Harrison Burrows this summer might rely on additional funds from a potential takeover or the sale of key assets.” The Blades have been linked with the talented left-footer throughout the summer, as the Posh captain heads into the final year of his contract.
As a product of the Peterborough academy, Burrows has made 185 appearances for his childhood club. His exceptional performance in the 2023/24 season, where he bagged seven goals, contributed 16 assists, and scored twice at Wembley in Posh’s triumph in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, has garnered widespread attention. The young defender has emerged as a sought-after talent in English football this summer, with clubs like Celtic, Norwich, and Brentford also expressing interest in signing him.
