Luton Boss Declares Town Will Never Bow to Pressure, Refusing to Sell Star Players at Any Cost

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has emphatically stated that the club faces no financial pressure to offload any players during this summer’s transfer window.

Despite their relegation from the Premier League last season, several key members of the squad, including Elijah Adebayo, Alfie Doughty, Teden Mengi, and goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, have been linked with moves away from Kenilworth Road before the August 30 deadline. Adebayo impressed with double-digit goals, Doughty’s set-piece prowess caused havoc, Mengi excelled as an England U21 center-back, and Kaminski remained a popular figure in goal.

Thus far, midfielder Ross Barkley has departed for Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee, while Gabe Osho has joined French Ligue 1 side Auxerre on a free transfer. Additionally, Dan Potts, Luke Berry, and Fred Onyedinma were released.

Reflecting on the squad’s return for pre-season training, barring Kaminski who had Euro involvement, Edwards highlighted the financial strength bolstered by Premier League parachute payments: “None of us can predict the future, but we are in a very strong financial position. We are well managed and do not need to sell anyone. While several players performed admirably last season, we are keen to retain our squad.”

“I’m pleased to say that I haven’t sensed any player actively seeking a move away. We have a focused and determined group eager to return to our previous heights. Of course, if an opportunity arises that benefits both the player and the club, we will consider it. However, significant changes to our core group are unlikely.”

Edwards acknowledged recent departures but stressed continuity: “Our goal was to keep the majority of our squad intact. We’ve bid farewell to players like Ross who had a fantastic opportunity, but overall, we’re in a strong position and looking forward to the season ahead.”
