EFL pundit Carlton Palmer is confident that Luton Town will dismiss Watford’s surprising interest in their rising star, Joe Taylor.
Despite a commendable effort, Luton Town faced relegation from the Premier League and now aim for a swift return to the Championship. During this challenging season, Taylor shone with loan spells at Colchester United and Lincoln City, netting 21 goals in 44 appearances across League Two and League One.
The 21-year-old forward’s performance has drawn attention, including from local rivals Watford, who, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, are planning a surprising move to secure Taylor on a permanent basis amid interest from other Championship clubs.
Palmer, however, believes that Luton Town will not entertain the idea of selling Taylor, especially to a rival. “Watford may be keen, but Luton won’t sell Taylor, particularly not to a Championship competitor,” Palmer told Football League World. “Taylor impressed last season with his goal-scoring prowess during his loans. He even featured in Luton’s Championship play-off final victory over Coventry City at Wembley, where he scored in the penalty shootout.”
Palmer highlighted Taylor’s attributes, such as his energy, work rate, and finishing ability, which made him one of the standout strikers in League One last season. He emphasized that Rob Edwards, Luton’s manager, would likely want to retain Taylor for their immediate Premier League return campaign unless an exceptional offer comes through.
“Luton must keep Taylor, especially given the rivalry with Watford. His qualities are essential for their Championship campaign,” Palmer said. “Taylor deserves consistent opportunities under Edwards next season, and Luton should resist any transfer offers to fully realize his potential.”
At just 21, Taylor has significant room for growth, and Luton stands to benefit greatly by keeping him. As Palmer suggests, holding onto Taylor not only boosts their immediate prospects but also secures their long-term success.
