Sheffield Wednesday have had an active start to the summer following their successful fight for survival in the Championship.
Initially on course for an immediate drop back to League One after a poor start under Xisco Munoz, the Owls turned their season around dramatically under Danny Rohl, finishing 20th. In May, Rohl signed a new long-term contract, and he quickly began rebuilding the squad.
This summer, Sheffield Wednesday have welcomed eight new signings: James Beadle, Ben Hamer, Max Lowe, Yan Valery, Svante Ingelsson, Olaf Kobacki, Jamal Lowe, and Charlie McNeill. More signings are anticipated before the season begins.
Key players Liam Palmer, Dominic Iorfa, Barry Bannan, and Josh Windass have all renewed their contracts. However, Cameron Dawson and Will Vaulks declined extensions, moving to Rotherham United and Oxford United, respectively. Additionally, Ciaran Brennan, Reece James, George Byers, Tyreeq Bakinson, Juan Delgado, and Lee Gregory have been released.
More departures are possible before the transfer window closes. Here are three Owls players who might leave this summer:
Pierce Charles
Goalkeeper Pierce Charles, one of Wednesday’s most promising young talents, broke into the first team last season. He debuted in the 1-1 FA Cup draw against Coventry City in January and played again in the replay, performing admirably both times.
The 18-year-old has significant potential, highlighted by his recent call-up to the Northern Ireland senior squad. Despite signing a new contract in May, his first-team opportunities might be limited next season following the re-signing of Beadle on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and the addition of Hamer. A loan move could benefit Charles’ development, preparing him to become Wednesday’s primary goalkeeper in the future.
Mallik Wilks
Winger Mallik Wilks joined from Hull City in August 2022 after a protracted transfer pursuit but had an injury-marred first season, scoring two goals and providing five assists in 24 appearances. Last season was similarly disrupted, and he scored just one goal in 18 appearances.
Wilks has struggled to impress Rohl and, despite scoring in a recent pre-season friendly against Alfreton Town, is unlikely to secure a regular spot in the team. League One clubs Charlton Athletic, Reading, and Stockport County are reportedly interested in a loan or permanent deal for Wilks, which could help him revive his career. Wednesday are likely open to a departure, hoping to recoup part of his transfer fee.
Michael Smith
Striker Michael Smith joined from Rotherham United in June 2022, scoring 20 goals and registering eight assists in 49 games to help Wednesday achieve promotion from League One. However, he struggled for game time in the Championship under both Munoz and Rohl and was linked with a move to Derby County in January.
Despite Derby’s loan offer, Smith remained at Wednesday, contributing to their survival in the second half of the season. However, his tally of just four goals in 34 games casts doubt on his future, especially with the club likely to bring in new strikers. The Owls might consider cashing in on the 32-year-old.
Sheffield Wednesday’s squad is evolving rapidly, and further changes are expected as they prepare for the new season.
