Breaking News: Paul Warne Urged to Secure Groundbreaking Deal for ‘Phenomenal’ Derby County Star with Immediate Contract Extension

July 18, 2024

Derby County has experienced a slow start to the summer transfer window, with no official signings announced despite claims of completed deals. As the Championship season looms, manager Paul Warne has highlighted the need for at least nine new signings to compete in what he considers the strongest league in years.

Before ramping up transfer activity, Warne must prioritize securing a new contract for one of his key players, Curtis Nelson.

Curtis Nelson Deserves a New Contract at Derby County

Following the conclusion of the 2023/24 League One campaign, Derby released six first-team players while offering new contracts to Louie Sibley and James Collins. However, the Rams have yet to finalize deals for these stars, possibly awaiting next week’s kit announcement.

One player who unquestionably deserves improved terms is Curtis Nelson. Signed on a free transfer last summer from Blackpool, Nelson has proven to be an invaluable asset. The 31-year-old formed a formidable partnership with academy graduate Eiran Cashin, helping the team secure 22 clean sheets and earning the Player of the Year Award for his dominant performances.

Nelson’s Value to Derby County

Nelson’s impact extends beyond his on-field contributions and partnership with Cashin. His presence saves club owner David Clowes significant money in the transfer market, given Derby’s current shortage of senior centre-backs. With only three senior defenders, including recent addition Sonny Bradley, losing Nelson would be a significant setback.

Despite turning 31 in May, Nelson remains in his prime and is poised to excel at the Championship level. Warne will rely on him to anchor the defense alongside Cashin, though additional defensive reinforcements are still needed. This situation might also open the door for youngster Jake Rooney to re-enter the first-team picture following his recovery from injury.

Securing Nelson’s future with a new contract is crucial for Derby County’s stability and success in the upcoming Championship campaign.
