Derby County is set to receive a financial boost from Sheffield United’s recent deal with Leeds United, which saw former Ram Jayden Bogle move to Elland Road.

BBC Derby’s Dominic Dietrich has confirmed that Derby will receive a portion of the transfer fee, though it won’t be a substantial amount. The deal for the right-back, reported to be around £5 million by John Percy of The Telegraph, includes a “significant, undisclosed fee” for the Blades.

Leeds United’s interest in Bogle, a former Championship promotion winner, was first reported by Mike McGrath. After several attempts, Leeds secured the signing. Upon his arrival, Bogle expressed his excitement: “It’s amazing [to sign for Leeds]. It’s a great feeling, a massive club and a massive opportunity, I can’t wait to get going. I knew there was interest and since I heard it, this is where I wanted to be. As I said, it’s a massive club and opportunity, a fantastic team, great staff, so I am really excited.”

Bogle joined Sheffield United from Derby in 2020, along with fellow full-back Max Lowe, in a deal valued at around £7 million. At the time, this amounted to roughly £3.5 million per player. Chris Wilder, Sheffield United’s manager then, hailed this joint move as one of his best pieces of business.

Crucially, Derby included a sell-on clause in Bogle’s transfer to Sheffield United, which now entitles them to a share of the fee from his move to Leeds.

Financial Impact on Derby County

Paul Warne and his team will benefit from Bogle’s transfer to Leeds, but the amount is not expected to be significant. The fee Leeds paid for Bogle is not substantially higher than what Sheffield United initially paid Derby, which means the financial windfall for Derby will be modest.

This summer, Derby has not hesitated to spend on new players, including a reported £600,000 for Dutch midfielder Kenzo Goudmijn and nearly £1 million for former loanee Ebou Adams.

Even a small fee from Bogle’s transfer will aid Derby’s transfer budget. The structure of the deal between Leeds and Sheffield United will determine when Derby receives its share. If Leeds pays the fee over several years, Derby will receive its portion gradually. However, receiving the money upfront would be more advantageous for Warne, providing immediate funds to strengthen the squad ahead of their return to the Championship.

Regardless of the payment structure, the additional funds will enhance Derby’s ability to navigate the transfer market, benefiting either this season or across multiple seasons.
